Day care or boarding in Carlisle?

Day care and overnight boarding solve two different problems, and Carlisle's ten listed businesses sit mostly on one side of that split: only one runs day care, while the other nine offer overnight boarding, either at a fixed kennels or through a home boarder. This is a different balance from many towns on this site, where day care is usually the larger of the two categories, so a Carlisle dog owner who needs day care specifically has far less choice than one who needs overnight boarding.

Day care: for a working day, not a holiday

Day care is for a dog that would otherwise be alone through a working day: it goes in after breakfast and comes home at teatime rather than staying overnight. Top Dog Doggy Day Care, on the Willowholme Industrial Estate in Carlisle city centre, is the town's only listed day-care licence, running Monday to Friday with an early bird drop-off from 7.45am and full or half-day sessions, alongside a grooming add-on. It has traded since 2021 and holds a 5-star council day-care licence, current to August 2028, and offers a free taster session so staff can assess a new dog before regular bookings begin.

Overnight boarding: kennels or a home

Overnight boarding means your dog stays away from home for one or more nights, either in purpose-built kennels or in a home boarder's own house. Six of Carlisle's businesses run boarding kennels: Allenwood Kennels and Moorfield Boarding Kennels and Cattery near Brampton, Berrier Boarders near Penrith, Fingland Pet Hotel and Biggards Kennels near Wigton, and Hairy Hound Hotel near Keswick. Three more are home boarders instead: Cumbria Dog Training and Home Boarding and Woof Terrain Dog Services near Penrith, and Solway Dog Walkers & Home Boarding near Wigton. Allenwood Kennels and Moorfield Boarding Kennels and Cattery, both near Brampton, also board cats alongside dogs, which is worth checking if you keep both. See our home boarding or kennels guide for how the two compare.

Which to choose

If your dog needs looking after during a working day and will sleep at home every night, Top Dog Doggy Day Care is the only day-care option currently listed for Carlisle, and it sits at the western end of the town on the Willowholme Industrial Estate, so check the drive from your own address before booking. If you are going away and need overnight cover, you need either boarding kennels, spread across Brampton, Penrith, Wigton and Keswick, or one of the three home boarders. Only Top Dog publishes a price, so see our Carlisle prices guide for what it charges and what to ask everyone else. Whichever you choose, ask about a trial visit first; see our first stay guide for what to expect, and see our area-by-area guide for what is listed closest to you.
