How Calderdale Council licenses Halifax's dog boarders

Dog boarding, home boarding and day care are licensed activities under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, and the whole of this page sits under a single council, Calderdale Council. Its animal boarding register is a live CSV file kept on the council's own open-data portal, Data Works, giving a licence category, licence number, business name, area, expiry date and star rating for every entry — one of the fuller register formats found across this directory so far.

What the register shows

Eight of the nine businesses listed for Halifax and Calderdale carry a star rating currently confirmed against Calderdale's register, running from 1 to 5 (the ninth, Toothill Pet Boarding, is covered separately below). It's A Dogs Life Halifax, Yappy Days and We Love Pets Calder Valley all sit at 5 stars, the top of the scale. Boothwood Boarding Kennels & Cattery, Croftmount Pet Resort, Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery and Freddie's Friends all sit at 3 stars. Millen K9 Services holds two separate licences under the same operator, rated 4 stars for its day care side and 3 stars for its home boarding side, so the two parts of the business are rated separately rather than as one figure.

A licence that has since lapsed

Toothill Pet Boarding's licence, as read from the register for this page, was due to expire in July 2026 — a date that has now passed, so no star rating or licence detail is shown on its page while that remains unconfirmed. The council's register may simply not yet reflect a renewal, so this is not treated as evidence the business has stopped trading; ask Toothill directly whether its licence has been renewed before you book, and ask to see the current certificate.

More names on the register than are listed here

Calderdale's register lists considerably more animal-boarding, day-care and home-boarding entries than the nine shown on this page. Most of the rest are excluded because no phone number could be confirmed from the business's own site, a Facebook page quoting its own contact details, or another accepted source, not because the licence itself is in doubt. If you cannot find a business you know operates locally, it may hold a current Calderdale licence without yet having a confirmed listing here — Calderdale Council's own register is the place to check directly.

Reading a star rating

A star rating shown here is a council licence rating from a risk-based inspection, tied to how often the licence is reinspected and how long it runs for; it is not a customer review, so treat it the way you would a food hygiene rating rather than a Google star. Where a business's own website or a directory quotes a different star figure than Calderdale's current register, the register is treated as the authoritative figure throughout this page. None of the nine businesses here sit in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so a star rating is shown for every one; that would not be the case everywhere this directory covers.
