Day care or boarding in Halifax and Calderdale?

Day care and overnight boarding solve different problems, and several of Halifax and Calderdale's businesses offer both. Of the nine boarders, day cares and kennels listed here, six list day care among their services: It's A Dogs Life Halifax, Yappy Days, Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery, Millen K9 Services, Freddie's Friends and We Love Pets Calder Valley.

When day care fits

Day care suits a dog that would otherwise be alone through a working day rather than one that needs to stay overnight. It's A Dogs Life Halifax, at Netherton Mills, and Yappy Days, next to Sowerby Bridge railway station, both run day care from a dedicated premises rather than a home, with Yappy Days open Monday to Friday from 7am to 6.30pm. It's A Dogs Life Halifax publishes a day-care price list, from £12 for a half day to £24 for a full day collected after 5pm.

When overnight boarding fits

Three businesses here board dogs overnight only, with no day care listed among their services: Boothwood Boarding Kennels & Cattery and Toothill Pet Boarding, both near Sowerby Bridge, and Croftmount Pet Resort near Ogden. All three run boarding kennels rather than home boarding, and Boothwood and Toothill also take cats.

The ones that offer both

Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery, near Todmorden, runs day care alongside overnight boarding and cat boarding, plus dog training, from the same site. Millen K9 Services and Freddie's Friends, both in north Halifax, and We Love Pets Calder Valley, covering Todmorden and the Upper Calder Valley, are all licensed home boarders that also list day care among their services, so a dog could move between a day visit and a full overnight stay with the same business.

Ask which one you actually need

If you are not sure whether your dog needs a day or a night away, describe your situation directly: how long the dog will be away from you, whether it has been left with strangers before, and whether it needs medication or has any anxiety around other dogs. A kennels stay and a day at a day-care premises are licensed differently by the council, so this is also a question worth asking as part of checking a business's licence.

Cats and other pets

Three of the businesses here also board cats alongside dogs: Boothwood Boarding Kennels & Cattery, Toothill Pet Boarding and Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery all take cats as well as dogs, and Toothill also takes rabbits and other small pets. If you need cover for more than one type of pet at the same time, ask directly whether a business can take both under one booking rather than assuming a dog-only business will.

Where each type sits

Day care here is concentrated around Sowerby Bridge, north Halifax and the Calder Valley towards Todmorden; overnight-only kennels sit closer to Sowerby Bridge and Ogden. See our area-by-area guide for the full breakdown of where Halifax and Calderdale's nine listed businesses actually are.
