Home boarding or kennels in Halifax and Calderdale?

Of the nine dog boarding, day-care and home-boarding businesses listed for Halifax and Calderdale, three are home boarders, licensed to keep dogs in their own house: Millen K9 Services and Freddie's Friends, both in north Halifax, and We Love Pets Calder Valley, covering Todmorden and the Upper Calder Valley. Four run boarding kennels instead: Boothwood Boarding Kennels & Cattery and Toothill Pet Boarding, both near Sowerby Bridge, Croftmount Pet Resort near Ogden, and Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery near Todmorden. The remaining two run day care only, from premises rather than either a home or a kennels block: It's A Dogs Life Halifax and Yappy Days.

What a boarding kennels gives you

A boarding kennels means your dog has its own space on a site built for it, with set feeding and exercise times and more dogs on site at once than a home boarder would take. Croftmount Pet Resort has twelve two-room heated apartments across a 10-acre site with a secure grassland exercise area. Boothwood Boarding Kennels & Cattery sits in the countryside above Sowerby Bridge and runs viewings for prospective customers most days. Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery, near Todmorden, has run for more than 30 years and pairs boarding with day care, grooming and dog training on the same site.

What a home boarder gives you

A home boarder means your dog lives in somebody's house instead, usually alongside only one household's own dogs at a time; the address is given once you book, not published here. Millen K9 Services is primarily a dog training business in north Halifax that also holds separate day care and home boarding licences. Freddie's Friends, based in the Holmfield area of north Halifax, publishes a price list covering dog walks, day care and small-animal visits alongside its home boarding. We Love Pets Calder Valley is the local branch of a national franchise, run by managers based in Walsden, covering Todmorden and the Upper Calder Valley.

The day-care-only premises

It's A Dogs Life Halifax, at Netherton Mills, pairs a day-care hall with a two-groomer grooming side of the business rather than boarding dogs overnight at all. Yappy Days, next to Sowerby Bridge railway station, describes itself as the largest day-care centre in Sowerby Bridge, with over 600 square metres of indoor and outdoor play space, and is also day care only.

Which suits your dog

A kennels tends to suit a dog that is happy with its own space and a set routine; a home boarder tends to suit a dog that finds a kennels environment stressful, or one that is used to living in a house rather than a run. Neither type is licensed to a higher standard than the other by default: Calderdale Council licenses both kennels and home boarding under the same regulations, so asking to see the certificate is the same question either way. See our council licences guide for how each is licensed and rated.
